‘Mom’ gives hopeful message in handling of Anna Faris’ departure


Without spoiling the premiere, airing Thursday on CBS, the trail is carved for the character, who struggles with dependancy, to have a contented and vivid future, which star Allison Janney says was the form of constructive message they wished to indicate viewers.

“We talked about how sometimes in recovery, your life can get bigger than you ever thought possible,” Janney instructed CNN through Zoom from the set of the present. “And I think that’s what happens for Christy.”

Jaime Pressly, who performs Jill, added: “It’s really important to (showrunner Gemma Baker) to portray a character that got sober and stayed sober, not somebody that fell apart and had to start all over again. I think that was really important.”

Faris and CBS announced again in September that the actress could be leaving the sequence forward of its eighth season.

“The past seven years on ‘Mom’ have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Faris stated in her assertion on the time. “I’m so thankful to (creator) Chuck (Lorre), the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience.”

On the present, Faris performed Christy Plunkett, a single mother who, like her mom, Bonnie, struggled with dependancy. Over the years, the present’s ensemble has expanded to incorporate different characters who’re recovering addicts and a love curiosity for Bonnie, performed by William Fichtner.

“Bonnie has trouble feeling abandoned. She has abandonment issues, so it does affect her greatly, and you’ll see throughout the show,” Janney stated.

Kristen Johnston, who performs Tammy on the present, stated, nevertheless, Christy continues to be “a presence on the show,” even when she’s not bodily there. “It doesn’t feel that different,” Johnston stated. “I mean, obviously I miss Anna, but it’s still just ‘Mom.'”
